John Riggins started his football career at Kansas University where he surpassed Gale Sayer’s career rushing record.  He was then drafted by the New York Jets in the first round, sixth pick overall where he became the first back in franchise history to rush for over 1,000 yards in a single season.  John signed with the Washington Redskins in 1976 where he ended his pro career in 1985.

While with the Redskins, Riggins helped lead the team to their first Superbowl victory in 1983 and was named Superbowl XVII MVP.  Riggins still holds the NFL record for 38 carries in a Super Bowl and remains the all time leading rusher for the Redskins.  He was the second player ever to rush for over 100 touchdowns in NFL history.  He is known to fans as “The Diesel” for his bruising style of running.

Riggins was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 1992 and the Redskins Ring of Fame in 1990.  Post football, he went into sports broadcasting for radio and television.  He traveled the U.S. for two years filming his outdoor cooking show “Riggo on the Range,” which aired on The Discovery Channel’s “Destination America.”  Currently he’s delving into “food and beverage” with John Riggins Sausage and John Riggins 4th & 1 Pilsner, while airing his thoughts on 106.7 The Fan during the football season.
